How WIDA can help your ELL lesson planning

Emerald Coast TESOL members Gwendolyn Williams and Amany Habib gave an interesting presentation on Writing ESOL Lesson Plans with WIDA. WIDA scaffolds its instruction of ELLs to meet the Common Core standards.

The pair talked about how WIDA advances academic language development and academic achievement for linguistically diverse students through high quality standards, assessments, research, and professional development for educators.

For example, an assessment such as graphic organizer to demonstrate understanding of a comparison meets the standard and can help a teacher determine what scaffolding will be needed to help the student.

WIDA, when used throughout lesson planning, can serve as a constant benchmark for teacher to measure against when creating instruction for the ELL The speakers reminded all that content provided by WIDA does provide realistic picture of the students abilities and methods to assess for verification.
